Guide: How To Enable/ Disable Windows Encrypting File System (EFS) Feature in Windows 11

File Encryption System (EFS) is an encryption service found in Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, and Education. A relative to BitLocker, which can encrypt all the drivers at once, EFS lets you encrypt individual files and folders. Encryption is connected to the PC user, so if another user is logged in than the user who encrypted the files, the files will not be accessible.

EFS text messaging is not as secure as other encryption methods, such as BitLocker, because the key to unlock encryption is stored locally. There is also the possibility that data may leak into files temporarily because the entire drive has not been encrypted.

On supported versions of Windows from 2000 onwards, a native encryption application called File Encrypting System (EFS) allows you to securely modify files and folders, thus protecting them from unauthorized access. . This also means that other users sharing your PC can do the same and encrypt as many files as they want. As such, in this tutorial I will show you how to safely remove EFS from Windows 11.
