Apple can now produce the codes that are traditionally sent via authenticator applications or SMS messages with iOS 15. Here’s how to set it up for the two-factor authentication services you’ve protected.

Data breaches and hacks are all too typical these days. Enabling two-factor authentication is one of the most secure ways to protect sensitive data kept on your favourite services and websites.

Most websites use two-factor authentication to validate your identity before giving access by issuing a one-time code through text message or email. Using an authenticator programme, which generates revolving codes that change every 30 seconds or so, is an even more powerful way.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Before you can use the two-factor authentication feature on your device, you will first have to enable the use of a 2FA app on the websites and services you wish to secure. Many sites may have text message two-factor authentication enabled by default. In most cases, you will need to dig deeper within the site’s security or privacy settings to enable the use of an authenticator app.

How you add or modify authentication may differ from site to site For this example, I went to Dropbox.com on my computer and logged into my account. Then I clicked my profile icon, and went to Settings > Security and enabled the switch next to Two-step verification.

From there, I chose Use a mobile app as my preferred method of authentication. Dropbox then displayed a QR code with instructions on how to configure my authenticator app.

Connect 2FA to iOS

Now that the QR code is generated, keep it open and set up the two-factor authenticator on your iPhone. Once you upgrade to iOS 15, open Settings > Passwords, then confirm your identity. Using our example of Dropbox again, select Dropbox in the list of passwords saved on the device. If you don’t have the site saved, click the + button and add the site’s URL, as well as your username and password.

Under Account Options, tap Set Up Verification Code. Choose Setup Key, if a website provides you with a numerical code, or Scan QR Code, to open your device’s camera and scan the QR code on your computer screen. This will confirm the site’s credentials and add a six-digit verification code under the site’s information stored on your device.

Confirm Verification Codes

Now that the verification code has been added on my device, it’s best to confirm that the code actually works. For Dropbox, I had to click Next on my computer screen to move past the QR code. The website then asked me to enable two-step verification by entering the six-digit verification code listed on my device. Once verified, Dropbox also offered the option to use my mobile number as a backup.

Before calling it quits, you may want to log out of the website and log back in just to make sure everything works. For logging in to Dropbox, I entered my username and password and was then presented with a request to verify my identity by entering a code.

When attempting to sign in to a 2FA-enabled website or app on your phone, a verification code should automatically appear above the keyboard during the sign-in process. Tap the code to verify your identification. If this does not happen, or you’re signing into the website or app on another device, verification codes are stored under Settings > Passwords on your device.

Select the website you are trying to log in to, which would be Dropbox in this case. Enter the six-digit code shown on the device into the verification screen on your computer to verify your identity and gain access to your account.
