Guide: How to Customize Start Menu in Windows 10 PC

On Windows 10, the Start menu is an important component as it is a daily experience to search for applications, programs, and files. Although the start menu has undergone many changes over the years – at times it has even been removed from the operating system – this feature combines Windows 7 with today’s Windows 8.x startup screen.

By default, the Start menu has a standard layout with items and settings that are normal for most users. However, if you want to make it more functional and personalized, the experience on Windows 10 is very customizable. For example, you can change the size and color, or use the full screen feature of the Start menu. You can use folders and groups to increase storage space and organize your resources.

Customize the Size of the Menu on Windows 10

You can customize the Start menu in two ways. First, you can change the size of the menu tiles manually, using either keyboard or mouse. Another way to go about it is to increase the number of tiles in a row and increase its size. Let’s start with the manual method first.

Change the Menu size manually

To customize the start menu icons on Windows 10 manually, follow the steps below:

  • Click the Start menu icon.
  • Then, bring the cursor to the edge of the Start menu panel. From there, open the window up and down to personalize the Start menu to your liking.
  • You can also adjust your size by moving it to the side.

Share or Remove Windows 10 Start Menu Tiles

If you use a specific app regularly, it is a good idea to divide it into a Start menu for convenience. Alternatively, you can also release anything you used once in a while.

  • To share a new application to the Start menu, open the Start menu and right-click on a specific application. Then, select Share to add the application to the Start menu.
  • However, if you are looking to remove a tile, right-click on the tile you want to remove and select Unpin.

Turn off Live Tiles From Menu

Some tiles on the Start menu will change as they are set to move. If you are not a fan of such animation, however, you can easily stop. To do so, right-click on the game tile, navigate to more, and select Turn Tile Live Off.

Set Windows 10 Start Menu to Full Screen Mode

You can change the Windows 10 menu to full screen from your default settings. To do this, go to Settings> Personal> Start. Now, scroll to Use Start Screen in full. Apart from this, you can also make a plethora of other changes from here, such as displaying the most used apps, making suggestions on the Start menu, the appearance of the app menu in the Start Menu, and so on.

Manage folders on the Start Menu

You can change the folders that appear on the left side of your Start menu. This is how the default view of your folder might be. You can switch from Windows Settings (press Windows Key + I). From there, select Personal> Start and select Select the type of folders that appear on Start. For example, here, we have selected to add the Music, Videos, and Personal folder to Start.

Create Menu Folders

You can add new folders to customize your Windows 10 Start menu. To get started, open the Windows Start menu. Once there, drag and drop the app icon on another top. After you do this, you will be asked to name the newly created folder. Name it as you like, and you will have a new folder with it.

If you do not like the new folder you created, however, do not worry. You can always restore your settings to normal by dragging application icons out of the folder.

Change Windows 10 Start Menu to Unique Mode

If you want to watch the old Windows 7 classic, you can easily achieve it. Follow the steps below to change the start menu.

  • Open the Start menu and right-click on a tile.
  • Select unpin to be removed from the menu.
  • Now do this for all tiles one by one, and soon, you will find yourself in the Classic Start menu.

Repair Menu Tiles

This is one of my favorite customizations. You can mix things up up some menu Start by changing the size of your tiles. To resize, right-click on a specific tile. Then, hover over Change and select the desired size. Do this to a bunch of tiles for a wet effect.

Create Groups at the Start Menu

Another way to change the Start menu on Windows 10 is by sorting the tiles in groups. Follow the steps below to succeed:

  • Open the Start menu.
  • Drag and drop a tile to a free space.
  • Once you do this, you will have a new team. You can name it by moving on.
  • Then you can add as many tiles as you want to the new team.

Manage Your Menu Tiles

On a classic desktop PC, tiles can look like a loss of space. Once you are using Windows 10 on hybrid or mobile device, however, where scrolling through menus can be tedious, tiles quickly become indispensable.

Edit the Name & Icon of Menu Tiles

Don’t like the tile name given to your Start menu? Right-click the tile, select Open file mode, then rename the existing file in Windows Explorer. While there, you can also change the label used for tile.

In Windows Explorer, right-click the file, select Properties, then in the Shortcuts tab, click the Change Icon, and select the given icon or Browse for the icon on your computer.

Create Shortcuts to Windows Windows Applications

Shortcuts can help you access a file or app from different locations. Windows applications worldwide do not provide an obvious way to create a shortcut, but we know two different ways. The first is almost too simple: drag an application from the Start menu to the desktop. What you will get is a shortcut on the desktop, and the application will also sit in your Start menu.

Alternatively, you can open the Applications shell folder, which hosts all applications installed on your computer, including Windows Applications. Press Windows Key + R to open the Run text (or long-press Start Button and select Run from Power menu), type shell: AppsFolder, and select OK.
