You will use the following sections to tell your browser what ActiveX programs should not work, what cookies should not be inserted, and what sites are known to be malicious and should be more restrictions when you visit them.

Internet Explorer is randomly configured – If you see this alarm, marked by the blue arrow in Figure 2, it means that SpywareBlaster has found that Internet Explorer security settings are not strong enough and should be changed to make your browser more secure. We will go into more details on how to adjust this further to this tutorial.

Updating SpywareBlaster

Your next step should be to update SpywareBlaster. This will ensure that SpywareBlaster has the latest updates so that you can better protect your browser. SpywareBlaster should be updated regularly, every few days, in order to provide the best security possible. When you click on Updates button It will be presented with a screen similar to Figure 3 below.

You should click on button label Check for special updates via the arrow green in Figure 3. Once you click on this button, SpywareBlaster will check for new updates that may be available. Once connected, if SpywareBlaster detects new updates, it will download them, install them, and notify you that the program has been updated. Otherwise it will tell you that SpywareBlaster is up to this day and there is nothing to record.

Protecting your browser

You should now click on Protection Mode button to return to the main status screen as seen in Figure 2. If you see an alert stating that Internet Explorer is safely configured you should click on the marked link Click here to learn more and edit. This will bring you to a screen similar to Figure 4 below. If you do not see this alert, you should be happy because your browser has set enough options and you can jump to Step 4.

We strongly recommend that you choose to adjust the settings that suit you. This will give you a more secure browser that will not be vulnerable to malicious ActiveX programs. To do this, click on button selected by the green arrow marked Set Recommendation Values. Once you click on the button it will take you back to the Protection Mode screen, except now you will no longer be alarmed.

Internet Explorer Protection

You should click the marked link Click here to activate security… next to the Internet Explorer icon in the status screen. This will bring you to a screen similar to Figure 5 below. This screen will allow you to make settings to Internet Explorer that will stop you from running known malicious ActiveX programs as well as cookies known as Spyware.

If you place a check mark in the box marked ActiveX Protection, designed by the red arrow, your browser will not be able to run the ActiveX programs specified in the Block List which is marked by the green arrow. This will automatically protect you from all the malicious ActiveX programs known in the list. We recommend that you allow SpywareBlaster to protect you, so you should put a check mark in this box.

If you want to remove security from items, you can check a specific item and click Remove Protection for Unchecked Items. button. If you place a check mark in the box called Cookie Security, marked by the blue arrow in Figure 5, SpywareBlaster will stop your browser from accepting specific cookies in the Block List selected by the green arrow in Figure 5. By placing a check mark into this box, SpywareBlaster will automatically block all attempts for certain types of cookies to be placed in your browser.

We recommend that you allow SpywareBlaster to protect you by checking the box. If you want to remove security from items, you can check a specific item and click Remove Protection for Unchecked Items. button.

Internet Explorer Restrictions

You should now click on the option marked Restricted fields in the left-hand navigation menu. This should bring you to a screen similar to Figure 6 below. This screen will allow SpywareBlaster to prevent your browser from running Java, ActiveX, and other downloads from known malicious sites.

Restricted areas

By placing a check mark in the box marked Restricted Domains Protection, SpywareBlaster will add all domains listed to the Block List, selected by the blue arrow in Figure 6, into the Restricted Domains section of the Security tab in the Options section Your Internet Explorer. It is recommended that you allow SpywareBlaster to add these sites to your Restricted Places list by checking the box.

Again, if you want to remove one or more of those sites from your Restricted Places, you can check the specific site and click Remove Removal for Unchecked Items. button.

Mozilla / Firefox Security (If you only use this browser)

If you use Mozilla or the Firefox browser then you should read this section, otherwise you may jump. To protect Firefox you should click the Mozilla Firefox marked option in the left-hand navigation menu. This will bring you to the screen display in Figure 7 below. This screen allows you to block cookies from the SpywareBlaster database.

Mozilla / Fififox Protection

To protect Firefox, place a check mark in the box marked Cookie Protection, marked by the red arrow in Figure 7 above. Once you place the check mark, SpywareBlaster will automatically add the Block List, selected by the blue arrow, to Mozilla Firefox so that these cookies are automatically blocked. We recommend that you let SpywareBlaster protect you for maximum security.

Again, if you want to remove one or more of those sites, you can check the specific site and click on Remove Protection for Unchecked Items. button.
