Guide: How to Use the Windows Sandbox in Windows 10 PC

Microsoft may place a simple Windows sandbox in the Windows 10 Update May 2019 as a safe environment for testing unreliable applications, but it goes much further. Windows Sandbox and PC sandboxing applications generally give you a solution to the “utility” which may be malware or web browser that you are not sure about. You can only leave dangerous ingredients, but you can feel a little more comfortable with Sandbox.

Windows Sandbox creates a virtual machine environment that protects “Windows in Windows” from the ground up up and take it from your “real” PC. You can open a browser and browse safely, download applications, and even visit websites that may not be appropriate. Sandbox also offers unparalleled flexibility: you can copy files to a virtual PC and remove them in isolation if you are sure they are safe.

Use Windows Sandbox in Windows 10

Check your PC for power support

One of the pre-requisites to using Windows Sandbox is to check your PC support for power consumption. This technology allows your PC to use its computing power to separate applications from software. It is often a program included in the BIOS such as Enable Authentication Support. We checked for this option on our Dell XPS 15 by pressing F2 on the boot, selecting Device, and then clicking Enable Intel Proof Technology and pressing OK.

You can learn more about how to activate the power supply on your device by checking the supporting documentation from your PC provider.

Check or upgrade your Windows 10 version

As previously mentioned, Windows Sandbox is only available for Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise. If you are running Windows 10 Home, which comes with many new PCs, you will not be able to use Windows Sandbox. You can check your Windows version by going to the start menu and clicking About.

Next, select About your PC from the list of search results. This should open Windows 10 Settings. Scroll to the bottom of the screen, and check under Windows Specifications. If you see Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, you are ready to go. If not, you can upgrade your Windows version by visiting the Microsoft Store application on Windows 10 and entering search for Windows 10 Pro. The proxy upgrade license is $ 100.

Besides Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, you must also make sure that your PC is powered by AMD64 and has at least 4GB of RAM and 1GB of free space. These are Microsoft’s recommended programs for Windows Sandbox.

Head to the Windows Classic Control Panel

By default, Windows Sandbox does not work in Windows 10 May 2019 Update. You must manually enable it with the classic Windows 7-style control panel. To do so, search for Control Panel in the start menu or search box. Click on Control Panel to list the results.

Next up, in the search tool running at the top right of the Control Panel window, click: Turn on Windows Features On or Off. You should see the top result that appears under Settings and Features. Click that option.

Find the Windows Sandbox in the list of Windows Features

In the next window, scroll all the way to the bottom of the list. Next to Windows Sandbox, tick the check mark, then click OK. Windows 10 will download the required files for Sandbox feature, and then you must restart your PC to apply the changes.

At reboot, you will get a similar screen when installing Windows 10 security updates. It should not take longer than two or three minutes.

Launch Windows Sandbox

After reboot, you can launch Windows Sandbox from the Start Menu. It should appear all the way to the bottom of your application list, but make sure to select Run as Administrator when you click on it. Alternatively, you can search for it by typing Windows Sandbox into the Start Menu and launch.

Once launched, the Windows Sandbox icon will appear on your screen in the rectangular box. This is a loading screen, so do not worry. After a few minutes, another window should appear with the familiar Windows desktop and taskbar. Here is your new virtual Windows 10 Sandbox – and a site for testing your applications.

Transferring files and other sketchy software

Once Windows Sandbox launches, you can install an installer for the software you want to test between your own PC and your sandbox. To do so, locate the file you want to move. Right-click and select Copy. Return to the window with Windows Sandbox. Right-click on the desktop icon and select Paste.

You can then double-click the installer file and run it in Windows Sandbox, just as you would on your PC. Note that you cannot drag and drop files between your own PC and Sandbox. Since Sandbox is on a separate partition, you will use Microsoft Edge as a middle ground to record the files you want to test in Sandbox for security.

Closed, browsing in Sandbox, and more tips we had tricks

Depending on your operating system, you can leave Windows Sandbox open as a folder window, or you can make the full screen run only in Sandbox. You can press the Ctrl + Alt + Break keys on your keyboard to change the Sandbox to full screen mode.

Also, there is no need to die Sandbox once it is finished. Exit in full screen mode and press X button as you would with a regular application to close the session. Popup-up will remind you that everything you recently did in Sandbox will be deleted, but that is the whole purpose of the program, so you can accept the alarm and continue with your work.
