Read the tutorial for four key tips to get started with iOS 7
After many inquiries from our users, here is a guide to four important tips for getting started with iOS 7.
iOS 7 is here (you can download it now if you haven’t already). We cover tons of iOS 7 tips for iPhone, iPad, and iPod users. But first, let’s go over four key points to get everyone started. In the Control Center and its overall size, apps stop multitasking the new feature, browsing your device with the revamped version of Spotlight, and a nice lock screen change that speeds things up a bit.
1: Control Center – access from anywhere with a swipe upwards
The control center is great and can be one of the iOS 7 features that are used the most. To access it you just have to do it Swipe at the very bottom of the screen.
You can literally access Control Center anywhere – the lock screen, apps, or the home screen – and have instant access to frequently used setting switches and other features, including:
- AirPlane Mode – Turns off cellular and communication radios
- Wi-Fi switch to turn the WLAN on and off
- Bluetooth switch to turn Bluetooth on and off
- Switch between do not disturb
- Orientation block
- Brightness settings (!)
- Music control – yes, iTunes Radio can customize this too
- Stop the guard
Swipe up at the very bottom of the screen and you’ll have almost instant access to all of this from a single control panel. Ain’t it great
2: Quit apps – swipe up from the multitasking screen
Would you like to close an app? Enter the new multitasking screen from Double tap the home button, then just swipe up in one of the app preview windows to exit that app. The swiping gesture sends the app from the screen and closes it.
This is probably one of the most confusing changes for many users as it behaves very differently than previous versions of iOS with multitasking and app shutdown. It’s also one of the better changes, however, and the new multitask control panel is great. Swiping left and right will allow you to scroll through running apps like in previous versions.
3: Search Spotlight – Drag down from an icon to search
Search in iOS used to have its own spotlight screen. Now you can look through it from any home screen by dragging an icon to display the spotlight bar.
Note that when you swipe down from the top of the screen, you want to move the notification center up, so you want to focus on an icon and drag it down instead.
4: Lock screen – swipe right to unlock
You can now Swipe right everywhere on the lock screen to unlock your device.
No more precise swipes on the small “Slide to unlock” bar, just use the same gesture everywhere. the bottom, the middle, the clock, no matter where, it opens. This is a nice change that will improve the usability and speed up the unlocking process. (Side note: you must always use an access code).
Bonus # 5: iTunes Radio – great for music fans
OK, iTunes Radio has nothing to do with gestures or swipes, but it’s great. If you’re unfamiliar and haven’t tried iTunes Radio, it’s a free music streaming service Access via the music app by tapping the “Radio” symbol in the corner.
Pick one of the preset stations or create your own based on a genre, band or song you like, and iTunes Radio will do the rest … fill an endless stream of music. Like a song You can buy it. Don’t you like a song You can skip it. iTunes Radio is a bit like Pandora, but its discovery elements seem even better. Give it a try, it’s great if you want to listen to your favorite classics or find new music. Oh, and iTunes Radio is now on the desktop with iTunes 11.1.
