Read the tutorial on installing Java in OS X Mavericks
After many inquiries from our users, here is a guide on how to install Java in OS X Mavericks.
Java has many uses and applications in the real world, but since it has been used as an attack vector in the past, Apple has made OS X pretty aggressive in restricting Java on Macs. As a result, Mavericks does not ship with Java preinstalled, and upgraded Macs will remove Java during the Mavericks installation process. For most of the users this is a very good thing as it further reduces the unlikely event that a trojan or something nefarious will be installed on Macs and many Mac users are completely unaware of Java. On the other hand, many of us need Java in OS X.
Many commonly used applications use Java, from the great cloud backup service CrashPlan to the Eclipse IDE to some online banking and financial services. Without installing Java into Mavericks yourself, these apps and websites just won’t work. Fortunately, it’s a simple solution, just like it was in 10.8, and you can install Java on OS X Mavericks in a number of ways.
Install Java in Mavericks from the command line
Installing Java from the command line may be the easiest. All you have to do is start the terminal in / Applications / Utilities / and enter the following command:
Assuming Java is not yet on the Mac, you will see this command. Enable, which says something like: “To open Java, you need a Java SE runtime. Would you like to install one now? Click Install when prompted to start the simple process.
From here, it’s like installing any other package. Keep in mind that if it is a website you want to access that requires a Java applet, you will likely have to restart certain Java based apps in order for them to work again, including web browsers.
If you run this command and have already installed Java, it will show the currently installed Java version instead;
Java version “1.6.0_65” Java (TM) SE runtime environment (Build 1.6.0_65-b14-462-11M4609) Java HotSpot (TM) 64-bit server VM (Build 20.65-b04-465, mixed mode)
If you’re not a fan of the command line or prefer to install the latest version of Java directly from Oracle in OS X 10.9, we’ll dive into that next.
Option 2: Install the latest version of Java from Oracle
The other way to get the latest version of Java is to simply download it from Oracle and install it manually.
- Get the latest Java from Oracle
Most regular Mac users only need the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and not the full Java Development Kit (JDK).
Downloading it directly from the Oracle website ensures that the latest version is installed. There is also the advantage that it can be installed and updated on Macs via remote login or SSH.
OS X masters Java well these days, and with newer versions of Safari you can even allow the Java plugin per website to further reduce the potential problems.
Remember, most Mavericks users can avoid Java and not have to worry about it. You really only need to install Java if a critical application or web service requires it.
